When you download and install InqScribe on Windows, you may occasionally see a warning from Microsoft Defender SmartScreen or Windows Security. Common messages include:

  • “Windows protected your PC”

  • “Microsoft Defender SmartScreen prevented an unrecognized app from starting”

  • “[filename] isn’t commonly downloaded. Make sure you trust [filename] before you open it”

These warnings do not necessarily mean that InqScribe is unsafe. Windows uses reputation-based protection to warn users about apps and downloads that are new, uncommon, or not yet widely recognized. This can happen after a new InqScribe release, a new installer build, or a change to our code-signing certificate.

InqScribe’s Windows installer is digitally signed by Inquirium, LLC. Before continuing, make sure you downloaded the installer directly from the official InqScribe website:

What to check

If you are concerned about security, here is what you can do to verify the installer.  Before running the installer:

  1. Confirm that you downloaded InqScribe from the official InqScribe download page.

  2. Right-click the installer and choose Properties.

  3. Look for a Digital Signatures tab.

  4. Confirm that the signer is Inquirium, LLC.

  5. If Windows shows a SmartScreen warning, click More info to view the publisher information.

If the publisher is shown as Inquirium, LLC and you downloaded the installer from the official InqScribe website, you can choose Run anyway to continue installation.

Microsoft Edge download warnings

If Microsoft Edge reports that the installer “isn’t commonly downloaded,” open the download menu for that file, choose the option to keep the file, and confirm that you trust the download. The exact wording may vary depending on your version of Edge and your organization’s security settings.

Managed or institutional computers

If you are using a computer managed by a university, company, or IT department, you may not be allowed to bypass SmartScreen or Windows Security warnings yourself. In that case, contact your IT administrator and ask them to approve the InqScribe installer.
